Special event delivers inspirational stories and powerhouse speakers

What does feminism mean to Tanya Plibersek MP, one of Australia’s most successful politicians?

“It means that you think every woman everywhere has the right to choose her own path, make her own way and to make her own choices.”

Tanya was one of more than 200 VIPs and special guests who attended a special marie claire International Women’s Day event last Friday at Sydney’s Hinchcliff House.

The guest list also included activist and 2021 Australian Of The Year Grace Tame, The Survivor Hub founder Anna Coutts-Trotter, Triangl swimwear founder Erin Deering, food writer and TV presenter Melissa Leong, author and podcaster Elizabeth Day, chef Kylie Kwong, actor Chloe Hayden, TV presenter Jessica Rowe and fashion designers Pip Edwards and Rebecca Vallance.

The Are Media executives at the event included Chief Executive Officer Jane Huxley, General Manager of Fashion and Beauty Nicky Briger, Director of People, Culture and Workplace Leisa Williams, Director of Sales Andrew Cook, Director of Marketing Carly Bowra, CFO Marena Paul and marie claire Editor Georgie Abay.

With the over-arching aim of fostering meaningful connections between women and inspiring the next generation of leaders, the event was designed to inform and empower women through inspirational stories and powerhouse speakers.

Georgie Abay said:

“Every single one of us craves connection. We need both connection and compassion to thrive. In a world where we never stop, taking a moment to slow down and listen to the stories of others has such an impact. And there is nothing like the feeling of being in a room filled with incredible women.”

Several of the speakers at the event talked about how they define happiness and success. Erin Deering said:

“It took me years to realise that happiness comes from within. And I didn’t believe that until I lived the other side and realised that it does.”

For Elizabeth Day, success

“isn’t money based, it’s authenticity based… and showing up as myself in every single scenario”. Melissa Leong added: “We are conditioned as women to please everyone around us… but ‘no’ is a fantastic word.”

The marie claire International Women’s Day was proudly sponsored by Pandora, with Napoleon Perdis Cosmetics as supporting sponsor.
